About this journey

Why choose Huangshan?

Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is one of the most iconic landscapes in Chinese art and culture — referenced in paintings, poems, and photography for over a thousand years. The experience of watching sunrise from above the cloud sea, with granite peaks emerging through the mist and gnarled pines clinging to cliff edges, is genuinely hard to put into words. Getting the timing, the route, and the overnight summit stay right makes all the difference between a rushed day trip and a truly moving experience.

Best time to visit Mar–May · Sep–Nov (cloud sea most likely in spring and autumn)
Accommodation Summit hotel (simple mountain-style) + valley hotel for arrival night
Transport Private car from station · cable car included
Meals Breakfast daily · summit meals available at hotel restaurant

Sample itinerary

All itineraries are adapted to your dates, pace, and interests. The outline below shows a typical flow.

01 Arrive & Ascend to the Summit

Arrive from Shanghai or Hangzhou by high-speed rail to Huangshan North Station, then private car to the cable car base. Afternoon cable car ascent to the upper mountain (Eastern Steps or Western Steps depending on fitness preference). Check in to your summit hotel. Afternoon walk to key viewpoints — the stone paths are quieter in the late afternoon. A simple mountain dinner, then an early night ahead of the sunrise.

  • High-speed rail from Shanghai or Hangzhou + private car transfer
  • Cable car ascent to the summit plateau
  • Afternoon walk to Flying-over Rock and key pine viewpoints
  • Summit hotel check-in — waking above the clouds
02 Sunrise, Hiking & Cloud Sea

Wake before dawn for the sunrise. On clear mornings, the cloud sea — a white layer of cloud below the peaks — is one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles in China. After sunrise, a full day of hiking the main summit routes: Lion's Peak, Beginning-to-Believe Peak, and the Northern Sea of Clouds. Afternoon at your own pace, with quieter trails away from the main viewpoints. Optional: watch the sunset from Bright Summit Peak.

  • Summit sunrise — cloud sea and emerging granite peaks
  • Lion's Peak and Beginning-to-Believe Peak hike
  • Northern Sea of Clouds viewpoints
  • Ancient Huangshan pines — famous twisted silhouettes
  • Optional sunset from Bright Summit Peak (1,860 m)
03 Descent & Xidi Village

Descend by cable car (or Western Steps trail if you prefer the walk) in the morning. Drive to the ancient Huizhou villages of Xidi or Hongcun — UNESCO World Heritage Sites set in the valley below the mountains. White-walled, grey-tiled Huizhou architecture reflected in quiet ponds. A beautiful, calm way to end the mountain experience before returning to Shanghai or Hangzhou.

  • Morning descent by cable car
  • Xidi or Hongcun Ancient Village — UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Huizhou architecture — whitewashed walls, grey tile roofs
  • Village ponds and memorial archways
