About this journey

Why visit Zhangjiajie?

The towering quartzite sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park are unlike anything else on earth. James Cameron's production designers visited here when creating the landscapes for Avatar — and the real thing is every bit as surreal and beautiful as the film. The national park rewards those who plan carefully: the right sections, the right timing to avoid peak domestic crowds, and the flexibility to change route based on weather and cloud conditions. HISIGHTS builds all of this into the plan.

Best time to visit Apr–Jun · Sep–Nov (best cloud and mist conditions)
Accommodation Park-edge lodges or mountain-facing hotels near the entrance
Transport Private car · cable cars and park shuttles included
Meals Breakfast daily · restaurant recommendations provided

Sample itinerary

All itineraries are adapted to your dates, pace, and interests. The outline below shows a typical flow.

01 Arrive Zhangjiajie & Park Orientation

Fly into Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (ZJJ) or arrive by high-speed rail from Changsha. Private transfer to your hotel — ideally inside or adjacent to the national park. Afternoon at the park entrance area: the Zhang Family Valley for a first introduction to the landscape — narrow gorge, dense forest, and the first pillar formations rising from the valley floor. Evening dinner in the town.

  • Airport or station transfer to park-area hotel
  • Zhang Family Valley — first introduction to the pillar landscape
  • Narrow gorges and forest floor walk at lower elevation
  • Orientation briefing on weather, cable car logistics, and route planning
02 Tianzi Mountain & Avatar Hallelujah Mountain

Early cable car ascent to the top of the park — views open up dramatically above the tree line. Tianzi Mountain and the Southern Sky Column (renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain in 2010) are the centrepieces of the day. Cloud conditions permitting, the morning light is extraordinary. Walk the clifftop paths, take the glass elevator (optional), and spend the afternoon at your own pace on the summit plateau.

  • Morning cable car ascent to the plateau
  • Tianzi Mountain viewpoint — pillar formations above the clouds
  • Avatar Hallelujah Mountain — the most iconic column
  • Optional Bailong Elevator — world's tallest outdoor lift
03 Tianmen Mountain & Glass Skywalk

A different kind of mountain day. Tianmen Mountain (Heaven's Gate Mountain) is reached by the world's longest cable car — 7.5 km through forest and cliffs. At the top, walk the glass-floored skywalk that clings to the cliff face — not for the faint of heart. Descend through the 99-bend mountain road. Afternoon return to Zhangjiajie town at leisure.

  • Tianmen Mountain cable car — 7.5 km, world record
  • Glass-bottomed cliff skywalk — 1,400 m above sea level
  • Heaven's Gate cave — natural arch in the cliff
  • 99-bend road descent by bus
04 Baofeng Lake & Departure

A slower final morning at Baofeng Lake — a deep green lake surrounded by wooded peaks, with optional rowing boats for hire. A quieter, more meditative end to the trip. Then private transfer to the airport for your return flight or connection to another destination.

  • Baofeng Lake — peaceful lake walk or rowing boat
  • Final landscape photography in the golden morning light
  • Private transfer to ZJJ Airport
  • Optional connection to Changsha or onward destination
